Frequently Asked Questions

Will I manage the work load in PE?
Yes! If you are well organised – a good quality for a PE teacher! Try to complete directed work tasks in between sessions as soon as you are given them. Plan a schedule for when assignments are due in – don’t write them the night before! Access the library for texts, journals etc well in advance of deadlines as there will be a rush on the same requirements by other students. Select key work nights, plan around training sessions, matches away, socialising, Big Brother, washing, going home etc. Try to do some work most of the time. In Year 1 the work is of a Level 1 nature therefore it should be just a small step up from A level – after that it gets harder!
Do I have to buy PE kit?
Yes! You are engaging on a professional course and your appearance will reflect the nature of expectations both within the sessions and around the university. You will be able to purchase the kit during your first week here and will expect to pay around £200 for a tracksuit, polo shirts, shorts, jacket, rugby shirt, socks. Also, if you join a sports club/team again there will be kit expenditure and sports insurance – that varies from club to club.
What books will I need?
We do not ask students to purchase lots of PE books as the library is very well stocked with main texts. However, on some courses you may have the opportunity to buy a recommended text which will be a valuable future resource to use in school.
Can I have a job as well as study?
Most PE students need to supplement their finances by finding outside employment. In Chichester there are many possible places of work – supermarkets, shops, pubs and restaurants, leisure centre, etc who willingly take on our students. Please be careful as to how many hours you work as you will get very tired and need to manage life. When on school experience students are strongly recommended not to work during the school week as the teaching days are very long and tiring.
Can I return to my old school for school experience?
No! You can be placed in a school near to home if you request one but most students prefer to have experience of new locations.
Do I need a CRB check?
Yes! This is essential now for any professional course working with children and young people. You must ensure this is done before coming to university.
What happens if I fail any assessment?
You have to resubmit the assignment or re-sit a failed exam. The pass mark is 40%. If you are unfortunate to fail a second time then you have to pick up additional modules from other degree courses to make up the required number of credits to complete each year. You will need to discuss your progress with the Subject leader and exams officer within the department.
Who can I talk to if I have any concerns as a student?
All students are assigned an academic advisor and they are your first port of call to discuss issues with the course, progress, etc. We endeavour to have an open door policy. If you have other personal issues then the Student Support Services are always available to help you. Please talk to someone, never feel alone and that no-one cares because we really do want the best for you while you are here at Chichester.
Where will I live at the end of my first year?
Many PE students tend to rent a house together usually within close proximity to the University. Student housing is of a good standard and checked regularly.
Can I have a car on campus?
No if you are a resident in halls. If you are a day student then you are allowed a car on site with a valid parking permit.
